How to Fix Camera Not Working on Your Phone (2026)

If your phone camera has stopped working, it’s usually one of two things: a software glitch you can fix in a few minutes, or physical damage that needs a repair. Most black screens and crashing camera apps are software. Blurry photos, cracks, and anything that started after a drop or a splash usually point to hardware.

This guide covers how to fix camera not working problems, how to tell which kind you have, and when it’s time to stop troubleshooting and get it checked.

Software Glitch vs Hardware Damage: How to Tell

Before you try fixes, a two-minute test will tell you which way to lean.

It’s probably software if:

  • The camera app crashes, freezes or won’t open, but the screen and the phone itself work normally.
  • A restart fixes it, even temporarily.
  • The camera works inside other apps like WhatsApp or Instagram, but not in the main camera app.
  • It started right after an update or after installing a new app.

It’s probably hardware if:

  • The camera shows a black screen in every app, even after a restart.
  • Photos are always blurry, hazy or have spots and lines in the same place.
  • The lens glass is cracked, or you can see moisture or dust behind it.
  • Problems started after a drop, a knock or water exposure.
  • You hear rattling or clicking near the camera.

Also try switching between the front and back cameras. If only one is affected, that points toward a hardware fault with that specific camera.

Cause 1: App Cache or iOS/Android Bug

The most common cause is boring: the camera app has a temporary bug. Heavy use, full storage or a recent update can leave it stuck.

What to try:

  • Force close the camera app and reopen it.
  • Restart your phone. It sounds basic, but it clears a lot of temporary glitches.
  • On Android: go to Settings, Apps, Camera, then Storage, and clear the cache. If the problem continues, clear the data too (this resets the app’s settings, not your photos).
  • On iPhone: you can’t clear an app’s cache directly, so a restart and an iOS update are your best options.
  • Check permissions in Settings so the camera app is allowed to access the camera.
  • Free up storage. A nearly full phone can make the camera freeze or fail to save photos.

If an update caused it, installing the next update often fixes it. These bugs are common after major releases.

Cause 2: Cracked Camera Lens

The glass covering the camera can crack even when the screen looks fine. A cracked lens often shows up as blurry photos, streaks, odd glare, or a hazy look to everything you shoot.

Don’t ignore it. Even a small crack can let dust and moisture in over time, and that can damage the lens or sensor underneath. If you see broken glass, don’t wipe it hard or press on it, since fine shards can scratch the lens or your fingers.

Cracked lens glass is not a home fix. Our camera repair covers both front and rear cameras, including cracked lenses, focus issues and sensor failures.

Cause 3: Water or Dust Damage

Water resistance isn’t permanent. Seals wear down over time, and a drop can weaken them. If water gets in, you might see fogging inside the lens, foggy or spotty photos, or a camera that stops working days after the splash because of corrosion.

If your phone has been wet:

  • Power it off and don’t charge it.
  • Dry the outside gently. Don’t use a hairdryer, and skip the bag of rice, which doesn’t dry the inside and can leave residue.
  • Get it looked at soon. The sooner a technician opens it up, the better the odds of avoiding lasting damage.

Our water damage repair includes deep internal cleaning and circuit drying, and we recover data whenever possible.

Dust is a different problem. Specks on the outside of the lens wipe off with a clean microfibre cloth. Dust trapped behind the glass needs a repair.

Cause 4: Loose Camera Ribbon Cable

Inside your phone, a thin flex cable connects the camera to the main board. After a hard drop, that connection can loosen. The camera may still work sometimes, which makes it hard to diagnose.

Typical signs are a camera that flickers, cuts out when you tap or move the phone, or works for a moment and then goes black. It’s not a software issue, so no reset will fix it.

Reseating or replacing a cable means opening the phone, which is delicate work. It also disturbs the water seals, so it’s best left to a technician.

Quick Fixes to Try Before You Book a Repair

Work through these in order. They take a few minutes and cost nothing.

  1. Restart the phone and reopen the camera.
  2. Clean the lens with a dry microfibre cloth.
  3. Remove your case, lens attachments and magnetic accessories. Metal or magnetic add-ons can interfere with focus and image stabilisation.
  4. Check the camera in another app. If it works there, the problem is likely the camera app, not the hardware.
  5. Update your phone’s software and the camera app.
  6. Free up storage space.
  7. On Android, try Safe Mode. If the camera works there, a third-party app is causing the conflict.
  8. Reset settings. On iPhone this is Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, Reset, Reset All Settings. Back up first.
  9. As a last resort, factory reset. Back up everything first. If the camera still doesn’t work afterwards, it’s almost certainly hardware.

If you’ve reached the end of the list, or you can see damage, it’s time to get it checked.

FAQs

Why is my phone camera showing a black screen?

It’s often a temporary software glitch, so restart the phone and force close the app first. If it’s black in every app and a restart doesn’t help, the cause is more likely hardware, such as a loose cable or water damage.

Why are my photos blurry even after cleaning the lens?

Check the lens glass for cracks and make sure no case or accessory is blocking or interfering with the camera. If both are fine, the camera’s focus or stabilisation system may be damaged, and a technician should take a look.

Will a factory reset fix my camera?

Only if the cause is software. A reset won’t fix a cracked lens, water damage or a loose cable. Back up your data first, and treat it as a last step.

Can I fix a cracked camera lens myself?

It’s not recommended. Replacing lens glass or camera parts needs the phone opened carefully, and a bad attempt can leave you with a bigger repair bill.

How much does a camera repair cost?

It depends on your phone model, which camera is affected and whether it’s just the lens or the whole camera. We give you a clear quote before any work begins. You can also check our price list.

Is there a warranty on camera repairs?

Yes. We offer a 3 month warranty on every repair.

The short version

  • Black screens and app crashes are usually software. Try a restart, update and cache clear first.
  • Blurry photos, cracks, moisture and drop damage usually mean hardware.
  • Water exposure needs a fast response. Power off and get it checked.
  • A flickering camera after a drop may be a loose ribbon cable, which needs a technician.
  • If the quick fixes don’t work, get a diagnosis before a small fault gets worse.
